The game employs the traditional "French" suits—hearts, diamonds, clubs, and spades—with eight cards per suit. The card hierarchy ranks from high to low as follows: J-9-A-10-K-Q-8-7. The objective? To capture tricks that contain high-value cards.
The points system is straightforward:
- Jacks: 3 points each
- Nines: 2 points each
- Aces: 1 point each
- Tens: 1 point each
- Other cards (K, Q, 8, 7): no points
This sums up to 28 points from cards. In certain versions, securing the last trick adds an additional point, making the total 29—hence the game's name. However, many modern players do not count this extra point, yet the game retains its iconic name, 29, even when played with 28 points.
Traditionally, the Twos, Threes, Fours, and Fives are removed from the deck to serve as trump indicators, with each player receiving one set of these cards across all suits. Meanwhile, Sixes are utilized to keep track of scores, with each partnership using one red and one black Six.
