Tencent Acquires Majority Stake in Kuro Games, Developer of Wuthering Waves
Chinese tech giant Tencent has significantly increased its investment in Kuro Games, the developer behind the popular mobile games Wuthering Waves and Punishing: Gray Raven. This move gives Tencent a controlling stake in the company.
Tencent's Expanded Holdings
Tencent now holds approximately 51.4% of Kuro Games' shares, becoming the sole external shareholder. This follows an initial investment in 2023 and a recent acquisition of an additional 37% stake. The departure of two other shareholders solidified Tencent's majority ownership.
Maintaining Independence
Despite Tencent's controlling interest, reports suggest Kuro Games will maintain its operational independence. This mirrors Tencent's approach with other successful game studios like Riot Games (League of Legends, Valorant) and Supercell (Clash of Clans, Brawl Stars). Kuro Games stated that this change will foster a "more stable external environment" and support its long-term independent strategy. Tencent has yet to publicly address the acquisition.
Kuro Games' Success
Kuro Games has achieved considerable success with both Punishing: Gray Raven and Wuthering Waves, each generating over $120 million USD in revenue. The continued updates and the recent nomination of Wuthering Waves for a Players' Voice award at The Game Awards highlight the studio's ongoing achievements.
