The domino gaming pieces form a set, often called a deck or pack. The traditional Sino-European set consists of 28 dominoes, commonly referred to as bones, cards, tiles, tickets, stones, or spinners. Each domino is a rectangular tile with a line dividing its face into two square ends, marked with a number of spots or left blank. A domino set is a versatile gaming tool, much like playing cards or dice, allowing for a variety of games. Extended sets, such as double 9 and double 12, are used for games like Mexican train and Chicken Foot. Different countries have their preferred games: England favors muggins (All fives), Scandinavian countries enjoy Bergen, Mexico plays Mexican train, and Spain loves Matador.
The origins of dominoes trace back to the Song Dynasty in China, with the game appearing in Italy during the 18th century. The evolution from Chinese to modern dominoes remains a mystery.
General Rules of Dominoes:
Blocking Game:
The most basic domino variant is a two-player game using a double six set. The 28 tiles are shuffled face down to form the stock or boneyard. Each player draws seven tiles, with the remainder unused. Players place their tiles on-edge to keep them private, but visible in number. The game starts with one player playing their first tile, which varies by game: Muggins starts with the highest double (6-6), Bergen with 0-0, and Mexican train with the next lower double each round. Players extend the line of play with matching values. The game concludes when a player plays their last tile or when the game is blocked, with the player causing the block scoring the remaining points.
Scoring Game:
Players earn points for specific configurations, moves, or emptying their hand. Scoring games often use variations of the draw game. In Muggins (All fives), points are scored when the open ends sum to multiples of five. In Bergen, points are scored when the open ends match. If a player fails to call "domino" before laying a tile, and another player calls it afterward, the first player must pick up an extra domino. In Mexican train, the double zero domino scores 50 points.
Draw Game:
In a draw game, players can draw as many tiles as desired from the stock before playing. The score is the total pips in the losing player's hand plus those in the stock, typically leaving two tiles in the stock. The draw game is commonly referred to as simply "dominos."
