The Hang is a fascinating musical instrument categorized under the idiophone class, originating from Switzerland. Crafted from two half-shells of deep-drawn, nitrided steel sheet, these halves are meticulously glued together at the rim, forming a hollow interior and giving the instrument its distinctive 'UFO shape'. The upper part, known as the "Ding," features a central 'note' and is surrounded by seven or eight 'tone fields,' all hammered into the surface. Conversely, the lower part, referred to as the "Gu," is a smooth surface with a rolled hole at its center, which produces a tuned note when struck at the rim. This instrument is also known as a handpan.
The Hang operates on similar physical principles to the steelpan but is uniquely designed to function as a Helmholtz resonator. Its development stemmed from extensive research into the steelpan and other musical instruments, showcasing a blend of innovation and tradition.
