Baldur's Gate 3: Free Orpheus' Prisoner Dilemma

Author : Sarah Update:Jan 17,2025

In Baldur's Gate 3's climactic moment, players face a pivotal choice: free the imprisoned Githyanki Prince Orpheus or allow the Emperor to handle the situation. This decision, made after acquiring the Orphic Hammer, profoundly impacts the party's fate.

Baldur's Gate 3 Orpheus Decision

Updated February 29, 2024: This choice comes after defeating Ketheric Throm, Lord Enver Gortash, and Orin, requiring thorough exploration of Baldur's Gate's upper and lower districts. The decision's weight is amplified by the possibility of companion sacrifices. High rolls (30+) may be needed for certain interactions to influence companion choices. Spoilers ahead!

Freeing Orpheus or Siding with the Emperor?

This decision hinges on player priorities. The Emperor warns that freeing Orpheus risks party members becoming Illithids (Mind Flayers).

After the Netherbrain encounter, within the Astral Prism, the choice is presented: liberate Orpheus or let the Emperor absorb his power.

Siding with the Emperor: This leads to Orpheus's demise as the Emperor absorbs his knowledge. Lae'zel and Karlach may disapprove, impacting their personal quests. While this grants victory over the Netherbrain, it may alienate fans of these characters.

Freeing Orpheus: This causes the Emperor to align with the Netherbrain. A party member might become a Mind Flayer. However, Orpheus joins the fight alongside the Githyanki. He might even willingly sacrifice himself to prevent others from becoming Mind Flayers.

In short, choose the Emperor to avoid Mind Flayer transformation, and free Orpheus if the risk of becoming a Mind Flayer is acceptable. The Emperor's choice might lead to Lae'zel's betrayal and Karlach's return to Avernus. The ultimate choice rests with the player.

The Moral High Ground?

Morality depends on individual perspectives, but it boils down to loyalty. Orpheus, a rightful Githyanki ruler, opposes Vlaakith's tyranny. A Githyanki player might naturally side with him, while others might find Voss and Lae'zel's demands excessive. The Gith prioritize themselves, even with wider consequences.

The Emperor, generally benevolent, aims to defeat the Netherbrain and aid the party. He accepts necessary sacrifices. Following his plan might turn you into a Mind Flayer, but it's a morally sound path. Remember, BG3 offers multiple endings, potentially resulting in an outcome favorable to all.
