Netflix Cancels Six Indie Games, Including Don’t Starve Together

Netflix has been making significant adjustments to its gaming strategy, recently unveiling its upcoming lineup of shows and games for the year. However, several anticipated titles are notably absent from the list. Netflix Games has decided to remove six previously announced mobile games from its roster, including fan favorites like Don’t Starve Together, Tales of the Shire, Compass Point: West, Lab Rat, Rotwood, and Thirsty Suitors. This move is part of Netflix's effort to refine its gaming portfolio, focusing more on narrative-driven games and titles inspired by their popular shows and movies.

This isn't the first time Netflix has made such decisions; Crashlands 2 was another game that was dropped from their lineup despite undergoing beta testing in certain regions. The shift in strategy indicates a move away from indie games towards content that aligns more closely with Netflix's broader entertainment offerings, such as the addition of Netflix Stories featuring shows like Ginny & Georgia and Sweet Magnolias later this year.

For those eagerly awaiting Don’t Starve Together, there's still hope. Although it won't be available through Netflix, the co-op survival game is set to launch on mobile via Playdigious, which is now handling the port. Similarly, Lab Rat and Rotwood, the other two titles from Klei Entertainment, have been removed from Netflix's plans, but Rotwood remains accessible on Steam in early access.

Tales of the Shire: A Lord of the Rings Game, a cozy life sim initially slated for a fall 2024 release, has been delayed to early 2025, and the absence of the Netflix Games logo from its website suggests it will no longer be part of Netflix's offerings. Compass Point: West, developed by Next Games—a studio owned by Netflix—was one of the earliest announced titles for the platform, making its cancellation particularly surprising.

Lastly, Thirsty Suitors, a stylish, story-driven RPG developed by Outerloop Games and published by Annapurna Interactive, was supposed to come to mobile via Netflix but has now been excluded from their plans.

While these games won't be available through Netflix, fans can still explore other offerings on the Google Play Store. For more on Netflix's latest developments, check out the news about Netflix Stories adding Ginny & Georgia and Sweet Magnolias later this year.
