A Retrospective Look at Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS Titles on the Nintendo Switch

This article takes a unique approach to reviewing retro games available on the Nintendo Switch. Unlike other consoles, the Switch boasts a relatively smaller selection of dedicated Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS ports. Therefore, this list combines titles from both handheld systems, showcasing ten standout choices – four Game Boy Advance and six Nintendo DS games – readily available on the Switch eShop. The games are presented without any specific ranking.

Game Boy Advance

Steel Empire (2004) – Over Horizon X Steel Empire ($14.99)

Kicking things off is the shoot 'em up, Steel Empire. While the original Genesis/Mega Drive version holds a slight edge in my opinion, this GBA iteration provides a solid and enjoyable experience. A worthwhile play, particularly for comparing versions, offering a more streamlined gameplay flow. Steel Empire is a captivating title, even for those less inclined towards the shooter genre.

Mega Man Zero – Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection ($29.99)

As the Mega Man X series faltered on home consoles, the Mega Man Zero series emerged on the GBA as a worthy successor. This side-scrolling action game, the first in an excellent series, may present some initial rough edges, but these are smoothed out in later installments. Begin your journey here and explore the series further.

Mega Man Battle Network – Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection ($59.99)

A second Mega Man entry, justified by the distinct differences between Mega Man Zero and Mega Man Battle Network. This RPG features a unique battle system blending action and strategy. The virtual world concept, set within electronic devices, is cleverly executed. While later installments show diminishing returns, this title provides ample entertainment.

Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow – Castlevania Advance Collection ($19.99)

The Castlevania Advance Collection offers multiple worthwhile titles, but Aria of Sorrow stands out as the best. For many, it rivals even the acclaimed Symphony of the Night. The soul-collecting system, while encouraging grinding, complements the engaging gameplay. A unique setting and hidden secrets add to its appeal, making it a standout third-party GBA title.

Nintendo DS

Shantae: Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut ($9.99)

Originally a cult classic with limited distribution, Shantae: Risky’s Revenge gained wider recognition through its DSiWare release. This title solidified Shantae’s popularity, ensuring her presence across subsequent console generations. Interestingly, its roots lie in an unreleased GBA game, which is slated for release soon.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy ($29.99)

Arguably a GBA game (its origin console), Ace Attorney blends investigation and courtroom drama with humorous storytelling. The first game sets a high standard, though later installments also deserve recognition.

Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective ($29.99)

From the creator of Ace Attorney, Ghost Trick offers compelling writing and unique gameplay. As a ghost, you use your abilities to save people while uncovering the truth behind your demise. A captivating and rewarding experience.

The World Ends With You: Final Remix ($49.99)

A top-tier Nintendo DS title, best experienced on its original hardware. However, the Switch version provides a viable alternative for those without access to a Nintendo DS. A truly exceptional game.

Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow – Castlevania Dominus Collection ($24.99)

The Castlevania Dominus Collection includes all three Nintendo DS Castlevania games. Dawn of Sorrow stands out due to improved button controls replacing the original’s touch controls. However, all three games are highly recommended.

Etrian Odyssey III HD – Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection ($79.99)

While the Etrian Odyssey series is intrinsically linked to the DS/3DS, this adaptation offers a playable experience. Each game stands alone, and Etrian Odyssey III, the largest, is a substantial RPG.

This concludes the list. Share your favorite Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS games on the Switch in the comments below!
