The 10 Best PlayStation 1 Games on Nintendo Switch – SwitchArcade Special

Author : Emma Update:Mar 17,2025

Well, folks, this is it—the final installment of my retro game eShop lists! I'm running low on retro consoles with diverse enough libraries to justify a whole list, but I saved the best for last: the PlayStation. Sony's first console exceeded all expectations, building a game library so rich we still see re-releases today. These games might have given Nintendo a run for their money back in the day, but now everyone can enjoy them on their preferred platforms. Here are ten of our favorites (in no particular order). Let's get this PlaySta-Show on the road!

Klonoa: The Door to Phantomile – Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series ($39.99)

Klonoa is a fantastic game that deserved more recognition than it got, though it certainly wasn't overlooked. It's arguably one of the most successful 2.5D platformers on the PlayStation. You play as an adorable floppy-eared creature navigating the dream world to thwart a dangerous threat. The vibrant visuals, snappy gameplay, engaging bosses, and surprisingly impactful story make it a standout. The sequel (originally on PlayStation 2) isn't quite as good, but you really should get both as a set.

Final Fantasy VII ($15.99)

This is a big one. Final Fantasy VII awakened the Western world to JRPGs, becoming Square Enix's biggest hit and a major factor in the PlayStation's success. Yes, the remake exists, but let's be clear: that's a different beast. To experience the original FFVII story, you'll have to brave some blocky polygons. It's still a fantastic game, and its enduring popularity is easy to understand.

Metal Gear Solid – Master Collection Version ($19.99)

Another PlayStation heavyweight, Metal Gear Solid catapulted a dormant franchise into the mainstream. The series got progressively more bizarre over time, but the original remains a standout. It's less philosophical rambling and more thrilling GI Joe adventure. It's also incredibly fun to play. And if you love it, the PlayStation 2 sequels are available on Switch!

G-Darius HD ($29.99)

Let's delve into a slightly more niche title. G-Darius successfully transitioned Taito's classic shoot 'em up series into 3D. While the chunky polygons haven't aged perfectly, they have a unique charm. The vibrant colors, satisfying enemy-catching mechanic, and creative bosses make it a truly solid shooter.

Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition ($19.99)

I could fill this list with Square Enix games, but I'll limit it to this and FFVII to give others a chance. Chrono Cross had a tough act to follow—Chrono Trigger—and it didn't quite measure up. It doesn't enjoy the same legendary status, but viewed independently, it's a clever, gorgeous RPG with a large cast of characters (though admittedly, some are underdeveloped). It also boasts one of the best video game soundtracks ever. (Don't @ me.)

Mega Man X4 – Mega Man X Legacy Collection ($19.99)

I love most Mega Man games, but my nostalgia goggles are strong. When recommending to newcomers, I stick to a few standouts. For the Mega Man X series, it's Mega Man X and Mega Man X4. While I enjoyed the games in between, X4 feels more polished. It was a brief moment of balance before things went off the rails again. But don't take my word for it—grab the Legacy Collection and decide for yourself!

Tomba! Special Edition ($19.99)

Sony published many games it didn't own. I always assumed Tomba! was a first-party title like Crash Bandicoot, but… oh wait, it was! Anyway, Tomba! is a unique platformer blending adventure game elements with tight action. Remember, the creator also made Ghosts ‘n Goblins. It might seem easy at first, but it gets challenging. A fantastic game, and great to see it back.

Grandia – Grandia HD Collection ($39.99)

Grandia was originally a SEGA Saturn game, but the PlayStation port formed the basis of this HD release, so it's included here. Made by many of the Lunar team, it shares a similar spirit. In a time of Evangelion-inspired RPGs, Grandia was a bright, cheerful adventure. It also features a satisfying combat system that builds upon Lunar's strengths. The second game in the collection is also excellent.

Tomb Raider – Tomb Raider I-III Remastered Starring Lara Croft ($29.99)

Another PlayStation icon, Lara Croft had five adventures on the console. Quality varied, but if I had to pick the best, it'd be the original. It focused more on tomb raiding than action, a smart approach for Core Design's era. But this collection lets you decide—you get the first three games.

moon ($18.99)

Let's end with a deeper cut. Originally Japan-only, moon deconstructs the typical RPG—its creators even call it an "anti-RPG." It's more of an adventure game, and it's… punk? Some parts aren't fun, but it's not aiming for constant fun. It has a compelling message, and I'm glad it's finally available in English.

That's the list, everyone! What are your favorite PlayStation 1 games on Switch? Let us know in the comments! I hope you enjoyed this series as much as I enjoyed writing it. Thanks for reading!
