11 Bit Studios, the acclaimed Polish developer, has unveiled a new trailer for their eagerly awaited sci-fi adventure, The Alters, which is drawing closer to its release. In this latest reveal, the team took a moment to reminisce about their groundbreaking wartime survival game, This War of Mine, which earned them international acclaim more than a decade ago.
While This War of Mine is renowned for its somber and despairing atmosphere, The Alters shifts towards a more vibrant and occasionally humorous narrative, focusing on the trials faced by various alternate versions of the protagonist, Jan Dolski. Despite these stark tonal contrasts, the developers highlight a deep thematic link between the two games.
Both titles, though set in entirely different worlds and with different tones, center around the theme of survival. In This War of Mine, players are thrust into the gritty realities of surviving a war-torn city, managing scarce resources and overcoming daily challenges to keep their group alive. On the other hand, The Alters frames survival as a desperate race against time, where players must continually relocate their mobile base to escape a relentless sun that disintegrates everything in its path.
These games challenge players to step beyond their comfort zones, venturing into perilous territories in search of vital resources. The fundamental difference lies in the protagonists: This War of Mine features players guiding a diverse group of civilians, whereas The Alters introduces a unique team made up of different incarnations of the central character, Jan Dolski.
The Alters is slated for release in 2025 and will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Excitingly, it will also be accessible on Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass right from launch day.
