Earlier this month, Alienware unveiled its new mainstream lineup of 2025 gaming laptops, aptly named the "Alienware Aurora". The first 16" models are now up for grabs at Dell. The more budget-friendly Alienware Aurora 16 features an Intel Core Ultra Series 2 i9-270H CPU and a GeForce RTX 4050 GPU with an 85W TGP, priced at $1,949.99. On the other end of the spectrum, the Alienware Aurora 16X offers a more powerful setup with an Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX CPU and a GeForce RTX 5070 GPU boasting a 115W TGP, coming in at $2,299.99. Both models are slated to start shipping in mid-June. Additionally, there's the option to upgrade to RTX 5060 graphics, though these are currently available for preorder with no confirmed shipping date as the RTX 5060 is yet to be released.

The new Alienware Aurora laptops move away from the typical gamer aesthetics seen in other Alienware models, such as the recently launched Area-51. These laptops adopt a more understated, sleek design reminiscent of standard laptops, featuring a slim profile and minimal RGB lighting. The Aurora 16, for example, sports a simple white keyboard backlight, akin to that of Apple MacBooks. Despite their unassuming exteriors, both the Aurora 16 and 16X are equipped with formidable gaming hardware, including a robust Cryo Chamber dual fan and copper heatpipe cooling system. The Aurora 16 is thinner and lighter, thanks to its efficient components like the low-voltage Intel Core Ultra 9 CPU and RTX 5070 GPU with an 85W TGP. Conversely, the Aurora 16X, which is slightly thicker and heavier, accommodates enhanced cooling to support the more powerful Intel Core Ultra 9 HX series processor and an RTX 5070 GPU with a maxed-out 115W TGP.
Compared to the pricier Alienware Area-51, which starts above $3,000, the Aurora 16 and 16X are much more budget-friendly. They also offer better portability, being up to 1.6 pounds lighter and 30% thinner than their Area-51 counterparts. Given the anticipated upward trend in Nvidia GPU prices, as reported by Tom's Hardware, it's unlikely we'll see significant price drops anytime soon.
Gamers should go with the Alienware Aurora 16X model
For gamers seeking a powerful mobile desktop replacement, the Aurora 16X is the clear choice. The $300 premium over the Aurora 16 brings substantial enhancements that justify the cost. Here's a breakdown of the upgrades:
- Better display: 2560x1600 resolution with 240Hz G-Sync versus 2560x1600 resolution with 120Hz.
- More powerful CPU: Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX compared to Intel Core 9 270H.
- Higher TGP rating for RTX 5070: 115W TGP versus 85W TGP.
- Double the RAM: 64GB versus 32GB.
- Double the storage: 2TB versus 1TB.
- Better material: Metal top and bottom versus metal top only.
- RGB keyboard.
- Thunderbolt 4.0.
