The first official trailer for the highly anticipated film "Rust," starring Alec Baldwin, has now been released. The movie, set to premiere in theaters on May 2, 2025, carries with it a somber history, marked by a tragic accident during its production. On October 22, 2021, a prop gun discharged by Baldwin resulted in the accidental death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and the injury of director Joel Souza. This incident occurred as Baldwin was demonstrating how he would draw his weapon for a scene, unknowingly using a gun that was supposed to be a "cold gun," free of live ammunition.
Following the tragedy, legal proceedings ensued. Charges against Baldwin were dropped in April 2023, while Rust's armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, who was responsible for the gun's preparation, was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and sentenced to 18 months in prison. First assistant director David Halls, tasked with ensuring the gun was safe, pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge of negligent use of a deadly weapon and received a six-month probation sentence.
Despite these challenges, "Rust" made its world premiere at Poland's Camerimage Festival in November 2024, paying tribute to Hutchins in its credits. Director Joel Souza attended the event and spoke fondly of Hutchins, emphasizing the significance of celebrating her life and work in a place she cherished. "We are here in a place that she loved so much, probably second only to being on set,” Souza remarked. “I want to thank you all for coming and for taking a few hours out of your day to come celebrate my friend and to celebrate her art and her talent. She really was something."
Set in the 1880s in Kansas, "Rust" follows the story of Lucas McCalister (played by Patrick Scott McDermott), a recently orphaned young man who accidentally kills a rancher and faces a death sentence. In a dramatic twist, his estranged grandfather, the notorious outlaw Harland Rust (portrayed by Alec Baldwin), rescues him from jail, leading them on a perilous journey toward Mexico. As they navigate the harsh wilderness, they are relentlessly pursued by U.S. Marshal Wood Helm (Josh Hopkins) and a ruthless bounty hunter known as 'Preacher' (Travis Fimmel).
