Hulu may be bringing Buffy back from the dead. Variety reports a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot is in the works, with Sarah Michelle Gellar potentially returning as Buffy, albeit in a recurring role. The series will focus on a new Slayer.
Adding star power, Academy Award winner Chloé Zhao ( Nomadland, Eternals) is reportedly in negotiations to direct and executive produce. Nora and Lila Zuckerman are attached to write and serve as showrunners. Notably, original creator Joss Whedon is not involved.
Whedon's absence follows allegations of creating a toxic work environment on the original Buffy and its spin-off, Angel.
Plot details remain scarce, but the reboot will center around a new Slayer with the possibility of Gellar's comeback.
The original series followed Buffy Summers, a high school student destined to fight vampires and other supernatural creatures, aided by friends Willow, Xander, and Watcher Rupert Giles.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer ran for seven seasons (1997-2003), spawning Angel and continuing its story through comic books.
