Civilization 7 Coming to VR This Spring 2025
Civilization 7 VR Exclusively on Meta Quest 3
Sid Meier's Civilization 7 (Civ 7) is making its grand entrance into the world of virtual and mixed reality exclusively on Meta Quest 3 and 3S. The announcement came during the Civ World Summit Event on February 8, 2025, marking a significant milestone for the franchise.
Dennis Shirk, the Executive Franchise Producer for Civ 7, expressed his enthusiasm on 2K's official blog: We're just days away now from the full launch of Civilization VII and look forward to ushering in a new era of strategy excellence for our fans!
Chris Pruett, Meta's Director of Games, shared his confidence in the collaboration: With the recent release of Meta Quest 3S and our strongest games and entertainment portfolio yet, it’s an awesome time for mixed reality. Civilization VII - VR is further evidence of that momentum: it’s a genuine Civ experience made specifically for deep strategy fans.
Notably, while Civ 7 will be available on PlayStation consoles, the VR version will not be released on PSVR2 at this time.
Board-Game Like Construction and Online Multiplayer
Civ 7 VR introduces players to a Command Table, where they can strategize and maneuver around the world as if playing a tabletop game. Players can switch between immersive virtual reality and mixed reality modes, experiencing a museum-like environment in VR or adapting the Command Table to their physical space in MR.The game supports single-player, co-op, and competitive multiplayer modes, accommodating up to four players on Meta Quest 3 or 3S headsets. Players can engage with AI-controlled opponents or challenge friends in multiplayer matches, seeing each other across the Command Table as chosen world leaders. A 2K Account and a Meta Account are required for online multiplayer.
Firaxis Games Respond to Player Feedback
Firaxis Games has actively addressed player feedback gathered during Civ 7's early access period, which began on February 6, 2025, for Deluxe Edition and Founder's Edition purchasers. The game, available on Steam during this period, received mixed reviews, with players highlighting issues related to the User Interface.
In response, Firaxis Games committed to improving the UI, focusing on making interactions more intuitive, enhancing map readability, and refining formatting. They also plan to introduce community-requested features like team play in multiplayer, a broader selection of map types, and more. A quality-of-life update is scheduled for March, focusing on UI adjustments, AI balance, diplomacy and crises improvements, and additional bug fixes.
Civilization 7 VR is slated for release in Spring 2025 on Meta Quest 3 and 3S, with no specific release date announced yet. Meanwhile, Civilization 7 is currently in early access and will have its worldwide release on February 11, 2025, on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch, and PC.
