Should You Fight Lu Bu in Dynasty Warriors: Origins?
Fighting Lu Bu is an arduous undertaking. In my experience, this battle took over an hour. However, there are compelling reasons to take him on. The bragging rights alone are significant; defeating Lu Bu is a testament to your skill. Furthermore, you might not have a choice – siding with Shu or Wei necessitates a confrontation with Lu Bu in Chapter 4 during the Battle of Xiapi. Finally, victory at the Battle of Hulao Gate rewards you with the "The Strongest" trophy. Defeating him in the post-game unlocks the game's ultimate weapon, the halberd, providing a powerful incentive.
Lu Bu’s First Phase
Before engaging Lu Bu, strategic preparation is crucial. Equip a weapon capable of inflicting multiple hits and staggering him, such as a swift sword. Battle Arts with low Bravery requirements, quick activation, and wide range are essential. My preferred combination included Falcon Flurry, Mad Blade Rush, Absconding Slash, and Flying Dragon Slash. Boost your survivability with accessories that enhance health and defense, like Divine Bird’s Wing and Divine Turtle’s Shell. Lu Bu hits incredibly hard, so maximizing your resilience is paramount. Finally, a weapon with a skill granting Bravery for each Perfect Evade is highly beneficial, as perfect evades will be your primary Bravery source.
Initially, Lu Bu will be mounted on his steed, Red Hare. This phase involves primarily dodging his charges. While fast, he pauses occasionally. Exploit these moments to unleash your Battle Arts, then quickly retreat. His attacks generally have a limited area of effect, except for Red Hare's powerful jump attack, making evasion relatively manageable. Once his health drops to 80%, he dismounts, initiating the next phase.
Lu Bu’s Second Phase

On foot, Lu Bu’s ferocity intensifies. His attacks are rapid, and he moves with incredible speed across the battlefield. A red aura indicates an uninterruptible combo. If he charges, evade and prepare for a series of three charges. A charge without his spear signifies a grab attack; evade this as you would his other charges.
His most dangerous move is signaled by an orange glow. This attack launches three devastating arrows, repeatedly juggling and severely damaging you. Counter this with a ranged Battle Art like Absconding Slash. Close-range Battle Arts are ill-advised here. Keep your Musou gauge charged for emergencies; the invincibility frames can be life-saving.
Lu Bu is surprisingly susceptible to juggling in this phase. Successful combos rapidly charge your Battle Arts, allowing you to break his Fortitude meter faster. Maintain close proximity for quicker reactions to his attacks. Remember: evasion is key.
Lu Bu’s Final Phase
Upon reaching a certain health threshold, Lu Bu activates his Musou Rage, signaling the final phase. He becomes unstaggerable and unleashes a relentless barrage of attacks. The objective is to deplete his Fortitude before he can execute his Musou attack. Since staggering is impossible, utilize all available resources: Musou attacks, Battle Arts, and rapid, powerful strikes. His Musou attack, if landed, immediately resets the phase, requiring you to repeat the process. Breaking his Fortitude here secures victory.
And there you have it – your guide to conquering Lu Bu in Dynasty Warriors: Origins. Dynasty Warriors: Origins is available now for PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S.
