Dragon Quest XII remains under development, with updates to be released incrementally, according to series creator Yuji Horii. During a recent livestream with his radio show group, KosoKoso Hōsō Kyoku, Horii confirmed that the Square Enix development team is diligently working on the project.
This marks the first official update since May 2024, following the announcements of the passing of Akira Toriyama (character designer) and Koichi Sugiyama (composer). It also comes after the departure of lead producer Yu Miyake, who transitioned to head Square Enix's mobile game division.
Recent restructuring at Square Enix and a lack of news had fueled fan concerns about the game's potential cancellation. However, Horii's statement allays these fears, confirming Dragon Quest XII's ongoing development.

Initially announced as part of the franchise's 35th-anniversary celebration, Dragon Quest XII will be the first main series installment since 2017's Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age. Square Enix has recently reported that the Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake significantly surpassed sales projections, achieving 2 million units sold.
