If you're a fan of thatgamecompany's Sky: Children of the Light, you're in for a treat with their first-ever in-game animated feature, The Two Embers. Known for its captivating art style, presentation, and storyline, Sky now elevates its narrative with this ambitious project. The Two Embers: Part One will have its limited in-game screening starting July 21st, offering a silent animated feature that delves into the origin story of Sky.
The Two Embers: A Story of Connection and Hope
The Two Embers is split into two parts, with Part One focusing on the journeys of two children separated by time yet connected in profound ways. The narrative begins with a young orphan living on the outskirts of The Ruler’s City, a once-thriving place now crumbling. The child discovers a wounded baby manatee, sparking a tale of grief, loneliness, and the small acts of kindness that can make a difference. Above them, The Ruler observes the decaying kingdom as a menacing storm approaches.
Without any dialogue or voiceovers, The Two Embers relies solely on visuals, music, and emotion to convey its story. This approach powerfully captures the child's sense of loss while the manatee introduces a spark of hope. Sky: Children of the Light has released the first look at The Two Embers: Part One, which you can watch here:
Each week, a new chapter of the film will be unlocked in Sky Cinema, an in-game movie theater specifically created for this experience. Alongside the chapters, new in-game content related to each part of the story will be available, allowing players to dive deeper into the narrative through interactive gameplay.
A Groundbreaking Approach to Animated Features
Instead of opting for a traditional release on a streaming platform or as a standalone film, thatgamecompany has chosen to integrate The Two Embers within Sky itself. This innovative approach transforms the game into more than just a gaming experience. Alongside the anticipation for Aurora's concert, this full-fledged animated feature elevates Sky to new heights.
The film is a collaboration between Light & Realm with thatgamecompany, co-produced by Illusorium Studios and Orchid. It represents the most ambitious project thatgamecompany has undertaken in terms of transmedia storytelling.
