Unleash the Ghoul Within
Fallout 76's latest update introduces the thrilling opportunity to roam Appalachia as a Ghoul. Bethesda announced on their website on March 18 that Season 20, titled "The Ghoul Within," is now live, bringing a host of ghoul-related features, mechanics, and new cosmetics to enhance players' C.A.M.P.
In this update, players can transform into a Ghoul through the process of Ghoulification by completing the "Leap of Faith" questline. This journey leads players to a new area in the Savage Divide, where they'll encounter unique characters who aid in their transformation. As a Ghoul, players gain access to exclusive abilities like Glow and Feral, along with 30 new Ghoul-exclusive Perks, or "Gherks."
The Feral ability replaces traditional hunger and thirst mechanics, offering boosts based on the Feral meter's percentage. However, if the meter hits 0%, gameplay changes dramatically: "At 0%: you gain +150% Melee Damage, and lose -5 Endurance, -99 Charisma, -30 Max HP, -20 Max AP, -300% Hip-fire Gun Accuracy & V.A.T.S. Accuracy."
The Glow ability allows players to consume radiation, granting immunity to diseases and mutations, and even causes them to emit a glow. This ability not only increases maximum health and heals damage but also enhances the effects of Ghoul-exclusive Perks.
Players have 28 perks to choose from and two new legendary perks designed specifically for Ghouls. Note that perks related to Hunger, Thirst, and Chem Resistance will be unavailable to Ghouls, as these are no longer necessary for them.
A Day In The Life of A Ghoul
Navigating the wasteland as a Ghoul becomes easier with the new abilities and Gherks at your disposal. However, certain factions like the Brotherhood of Steel may become hostile towards Ghouls, potentially blocking access to specific questlines.
Fortunately, a new NPC named Jaye can provide players with disguises to bypass these restrictions and interact with previously inaccessible content. If the Ghoul lifestyle isn't for you, you can revert to human form via the Character Screen. However, this is a one-way change; you cannot redo the "Leap of Faith" questline. To become a Ghoul again, players can purchase the Ghoul Retransformation for 1000 Atoms on the Character Screen.
Level 50 Character Boost and Season 20 Patch Notes
Whether you're a newcomer or a seasoned resident of Appalachia, the Level 50 Character Boost can kickstart your adventure. Available for 1500 Atoms in the Season 20 update, this boost equips players with various perks and enhancements, allowing immediate access to multiplayer features like Daily Ops, Public Events, and select story content.
The update also includes numerous bug fixes and balance adjustments, such as accessibility improvements, combat balancing, and weapon damage changes. Bethesda has also teased the upcoming "The Big Bloom" update, set for April 29, as part of their season calendar.
Since its launch in November 2018, Fallout 76 has overcome its initial challenges with bugs and issues. With continuous updates culminating in the Season 20 release, the game now boasts a "Mostly Positive" rating on Steam, with 76% of reviews being positive.
