Rockstar's latest update to Grand Theft Auto 5, known as GTA 5 Enhanced, has not been well-received by the Steam community since its release on March 4. The game currently holds a 'mixed' user review rating, with only 54% of the 19,772 reviews being positive. This is a stark contrast to the original GTA 5 on Steam, which, despite being unlisted and no longer searchable, boasts a 'very positive' rating.
GTA 5 Enhanced is the lowest-rated GTA title on Steam, even falling below Grand Theft Auto III – The Definitive Edition, which has a 66% positive review rating. This new version offers a free upgrade for PC players, bringing features previously exclusive to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S versions of GTA Online. These include access to Hao’s Special Works for vehicles and performance upgrades, animal encounters, and the ability to purchase a GTA+ Membership, along with enhanced graphics and quicker load times. All existing PC players can upgrade for free and transfer their Story Mode and Online progress.

However, the process of migrating accounts has been fraught with issues, which is a major point of contention among players. Many negative reviews highlight problems with account migration, with some players unable to transfer their progress. Frustrated users have shared their experiences, with one stating, "The GTA Online profile associated with this Rockstar Games account is not eligible for migration at this time," and expressing reluctance to start over after hundreds of hours of gameplay. Others have criticized the upgrade as a downgrade and expressed dissatisfaction with Rockstar's support.
Despite these challenges, GTA 5 Enhanced continues to attract a large player base, with a peak concurrent player count of 187,059 on Steam since its launch. However, the issues have raised concerns among PC gamers about the potential launch of Grand Theft Auto 6 on PC, especially given that GTA 6 is set to release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S in the fall of 2025, with no confirmed PC release date yet. A former Rockstar developer has urged PC gamers to remain patient and trust the studio's plans.
