How To Unlock Multiple Pets in Stardew Valley
When you start a new game in Stardew Valley, you're given the chance to adopt either a cat or a dog to live on your farm. Previously, the game limited players to one pet per save file, but the 1.6 update in early 2024 changed this, allowing for multiple pets.
To unlock this feature, you'll need to meet certain in-game requirements. First, you must maximize your friendship level with your current pet. This involves filling their water bowl daily with your Watering Can, except on rainy or snowy days when it fills automatically.
Additionally, you should pet them once a day. A heart bubble will appear above their head when you've done this correctly. You can monitor your pet's friendship level through the "Animals" tab in the pause menu.
Once their friendship meter is full, you'll receive a notification from Marnie via mail, informing you about the availability of additional pets at her shop, located south of your farm. If you haven't adopted a pet by the end of your first year, Marnie will send this notice at the start of Year 2.

You'll be presented with a list of 12 Pet Licenses, including five variations of dogs and cats, and two types of turtles. Each license comes with a cost, so ensure you have enough gold.

How To Get Supplies for Pets in Stardew Valley
After choosing your new pets, head to Robin's carpentry shop in the northern part of Pelican Town to purchase Pet Bowls. These bowls are essential as they provide water and serve as a "home" for your pets, preventing their friendship meter from decreasing. Neglecting this can lead to your pets running away, which would be a costly loss.
Pet Bowls are available under Robin's "Construct Farm Buildings" menu, costing 5,000g and 25 x Hardwood (harvested with a Copper Axe or better). It's advisable to buy these before adopting your new pets to maintain their friendship levels.
You can also buy optional decorative items for your pets at Marnie's Ranch, such as Doghouses and Cat Trees. These items enhance the aesthetic of your farm but do not affect your pets' friendship meters.
