DC Studios co-chief James Gunn addresses online criticism regarding Superman's facial expression during a flight sequence in a recently released TV spot.
A new 30-second promotional video showcased two previously unseen scenes: Lex Luthor exiting a helicopter in a snowy environment, possibly near the Fortress of Solitude, and Superman performing a barrel roll during high-speed flight over an icy landscape.
The scene featuring Superman elicited varied reactions. Some viewers found Superman's face unusually still, contrasting with the movement of his hair and cape, attributing the effect to potentially flawed CGI. However, Gunn clarified on Threads that the shot employed no CGI on Corenswet's face, explaining the effect as a result of the close-up wide-angle lens used. He confirmed the Svalbard, Norway location and Corenswet's on-set presence.
The director's explanation hasn't entirely quelled the debate. Comparisons are being drawn to the flight sequence of Adam Warlock in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, also directed by Gunn. Despite the controversy surrounding this brief clip, anticipation for the Superman film remains high.
Superman is slated for release on July 11, 2025, marking the inaugural film of DCU's Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.
