Keanu Reeves has provided an exciting update on the long-awaited sequel to the 2005 cult classic, Constantine. As John Constantine, the occult detective and exorcist from DC Comics, Reeves captured fans' hearts in the original film, and the demand for a sequel has been strong ever since. Now, after years of anticipation, Reeves has confirmed that a pitch for Constantine 2 has been successfully presented to DC Studios.
In a recent interview with Inverse, Reeves shared, "We've been trying to make this film for over a decade, and we just recently put a story together and pitched it to DC Studios and they said, ‘Okay.’ So, we're going to try and write a script." This marks a significant step forward for the project, although it's important to note that the film is not yet officially greenlit by DC Studios co-chiefs James Gunn and Peter Safran. Constantine 2 has not been mentioned as part of the rebooted DCU, leaving its future somewhat uncertain.
Despite this, Reeves teased that if Constantine 2 does come to fruition, it will be set in the same universe as the original film. He humorously added, "John Constantine's going to be tortured even more," hinting at the character's continued struggles.
Adding to the excitement, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura revealed in a September interview with ComicBook that a script for Constantine 2 is already in his inbox. However, he admitted to being "too scared to read it" due to his high hopes for the sequel. "You know it's in my inbox right now, funny enough," he said. "I'm too scared to read it, though, I want it to be good so bad. I’ll probably read it in the next few days, when I get on an airplane."
While fans eagerly await further developments, the prospect of Constantine 2 moving forward is undoubtedly thrilling. Reeves' commitment to the project and the existence of a script are promising signs that the beloved character may soon return to the big screen.
