Capcom's new action strategy game, Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess, launched July 19th, and to celebrate, they commissioned a unique Bunraku puppet theater performance. This collaboration showcases both the game's deep Japanese roots and the artistry of Japan's cultural heritage to a global audience.
Capcom Showcases Kunitsu-Gami with a Traditional Japanese Theater Production
A Fusion of Tradition and Technology
The National Bunraku Theater of Osaka, celebrating its 40th anniversary, created a special Bunraku performance for the game's launch. This ancient art form, featuring large puppets manipulated to a samisen soundtrack, provided a captivating prequel to the game's storyline. Master Puppeteer Kanjuro Kiritake brought the game's protagonists, Soh and the Maiden, to life in a new play, "Ceremony of the Deity: The Maiden's Destiny." The production cleverly blended traditional Bunraku techniques with cutting-edge CG backdrops from the game itself, creating a "new form of Bunraku."
"Bunraku's origins are in Osaka, much like Capcom's," Kiritake stated. "This collaboration allows us to share our art with the world."
Bunraku's Influence on Kunitsu-Gami
The connection between Kunitsu-Gami and Bunraku runs deep. Producer Tairoku Nozoe explained that director Shuichi Kawata's passion for Bunraku significantly influenced the game's development. Even before the collaboration, the game's design drew heavily from the movements and storytelling of Ningyo Joruri Bunraku.
Nozoe shared, "Kawata's enthusiasm for Bunraku led us to experience a performance together. The artistry and enduring power of this form inspired us to reach out to the National Bunraku Theater."
Capcom aimed to introduce the captivating world of Bunraku to a global audience, believing it perfectly complements the game's cultural themes. The performance serves as a testament to the game's dedication to Japanese folklore and artistic expression.
In Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess, players journey through the corrupted Mount Kafuku, purifying villages by day and protecting the Maiden by night, utilizing sacred masks to restore balance. The game is available on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox consoles, including Xbox Game Pass. A free demo is also available across all platforms.
