Larian Studios, the developers behind the critically acclaimed Baldur's Gate 3, have announced a significant shift in focus towards their next project, promising a "media blackout" for the foreseeable future. While fans eagerly await the release of Baldur’s Gate 3 Patch 8 later this year, the studio's full attention is now dedicated to crafting a brand new game.
Reflecting on the journey so far, Larian boss Swen Vincke took to Twitter to express nostalgia and pride in the success of Baldur's Gate 3, hinting that "the story ain't over yet." This statement, coupled with Larian's move to a media blackout, underscores the studio's commitment to their upcoming title.
Got me all nostalgic - it really has been an incredible journey so far. But the story ain't over yet. Stay tuned. Going to try to skip the dark night of the soul moment though if you don't mind. https://t.co/eLSTv3CXb4

In a statement to VideoGamer, Larian confirmed that Swen Vincke and the team are fully focused on their next title, which is neither a sequel to Baldur's Gate 3 nor a Dungeons & Dragons game. After unsuccessful attempts to generate internal enthusiasm for a Baldur's Gate follow-up, the studio decided to pursue a fresh project.
Back in November 2023, Vincke hinted at the studio's next big game, expressing excitement and a desire to push boundaries. This was in response to Baldur’s Gate 3's numerous nominations at The Game Awards. Additionally, in July 2023, Vincke mentioned to IGN that a sequel to the Divinity: Original Sin series is also on the horizon, though fans shouldn't expect it anytime soon.
"It's our own universe we built, so we're definitely gonna get back there at some point," Vincke stated. "We will get back there at some point. We'll first finish [Baldur's Gate 3], and then take a break, because we will need to refresh ourselves creatively also. You’re seeing 400 developers putting their heart and souls into this. You’re getting the best of them and their craft into this game. And so I can tell you, it's quite a thing."
With Divinity not being the next project, speculation abounds about what Larian might be working on. Could it be a game set in a different universe, perhaps branching into science fiction or a modern-day setting? Or might they explore a new genre altogether? While the possibilities are intriguing, it seems we may have to wait years before Larian lifts the veil on their mysterious new project.
