If you were hoping for Mark Hamill to reprise his iconic role as a Force ghost version of Luke Skywalker, you may be disappointed. The legendary actor has officially closed the door on returning to the Star Wars universe, stating it's time for the franchise to focus on new characters rather than relying on legacy figures.
During an interview with ComicBook.com promoting his new film The Life of Chuck, Hamill firmly dismissed the possibility of appearing as Luke's Force ghost in the upcoming Rey-centric Star Wars movie New Jedi Order. His reasoning was definitive - Luke literally left his Jedi robes behind in 2017's The Last Jedi.

"I remain eternally grateful to George [Lucas] for giving me the opportunity to be part of something so special," Hamill reflected. "Back when we started, Star Wars was just 'the most expensive low-budget movie ever made' according to George. We never imagined it would become this cultural phenomenon that spans generations."
"My time with the character has passed," he continued. "The franchise should embrace its future and all the new characters waiting to be explored. Besides, when my character became one with the Force in The Last Jedi, he literally left his robes behind. There's no way I'm appearing as a naked Force ghost!"
While Hamill won't return, Daisy Ridley is confirmed to reprise her role as Rey in director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy's sequel to Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker. The film will follow Rey's efforts to rebuild the Jedi Order approximately 15 years after the events of the previous installment.
Details about New Jedi Order remain scarce. In a January 2024 interview with AlloCiné, Ridley shared modest insights: "When I learned about the story direction, I immediately knew I wanted to be involved. It offers a fresh perspective on the Star Wars galaxy while taking the narrative in exciting new directions."
Before New Jedi Order arrives, Star Wars fans can anticipate The Mandalorian and Grogu in 2026, followed by Shawn Levy's Starfighter featuring Ryan Gosling in 2027.
