For 90s fans of Marvel, Capcom, and fighting games, Capcom's Marvel-based fighters were a dream. Beginning with the excellent X-Men: Children of the Atom, the series consistently improved. From the expansion to the wider Marvel Universe in Marvel Super Heroes, to the groundbreaking Marvel/Street Fighter crossovers, and the over-the-top brilliance of Marvel vs. Capcom and Marvel vs. Capcom 2, Capcom continually raised the bar. Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics compiles these iconic titles, plus the bonus beat 'em up, Punisher. A truly fantastic collection of classic games.
This compilation shares similarities with the Capcom Fighting Collection, including features and extras. Unfortunately, this also means a single shared save state across all seven games. While inconvenient for fighting games, it's particularly frustrating with the beat 'em up, where independent saves would be beneficial. Despite this, the collection offers extensive options, including visual filters and gameplay adjustments, along with impressive extras such as a comprehensive art gallery and music player, and rollback online multiplayer. A notable addition is NAOMI hardware emulation, resulting in excellent performance and visuals for Marvel vs. Capcom 2.
While not a criticism, the absence of home console versions is noteworthy. The PlayStation EX versions of the tag-team games offer unique differences, and the Dreamcast version of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 boasts fun extras ideal for solo play. Including Capcom's Super NES Marvel titles, despite their imperfections, would have been a welcome addition. However, the collection's title accurately reflects its contents, focusing solely on arcade classics.
Marvel and fighting game enthusiasts will appreciate this exceptional collection. The games are outstanding, meticulously preserved, and complemented by a robust selection of extras and options. The single shared save state is a significant drawback, but otherwise, there's little to fault. Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics is a must-have compilation, especially enjoyable on the Switch.

Yars Rising ($29.99)
Initial skepticism regarding this Metroidvania-style Yars game was understandable. The concept of a young hacker, code-named Yar, in a Yars' Revenge Metroidvania seemed unconventional. However, WayForward delivers a solid game. The visuals and audio are impressive, gameplay is smooth, and level design is adequate. While WayForward's tendency towards lengthy boss battles persists, it's not a major issue.
WayForward successfully bridges the gap between this new game and the original single-screen shooter. Yars' Revenge-style sequences are frequent, acquired abilities reflect the original, and the lore is reasonably well-integrated. The connection might feel tenuous, but Atari's attempts to expand its classic library are understandable. The game, however, seems to cater to two distinct audiences with limited overlap, raising questions about the design choices.
Despite conceptual debates, the game is undeniably enjoyable. It may not rival the genre's best, but it offers a satisfying Metroidvania experience for a weekend playthrough. Future iterations might better integrate the disparate elements.

Rugrats: Adventures in Gameland ($24.99)
Lacking significant nostalgia for Rugrats, the expectation for Rugrats: Adventures in Gameland was neutral. The game's resemblance to Bonk was noted, fitting Tommy's physique. Gameplay revealed crisp visuals surpassing the show's quality, though initial control placement was awkward (fortunately adjustable). The Rugrats theme song and Reptar coins were present, along with simple puzzles and enemies. The game is a platformer with exploration elements, a tried and tested formula.
Tommy's ability to take damage led to switching to Chuckie, revealing a familiar high-arc jump reminiscent of Super Mario Bros. 2 (USA). Phil's low jump and Lil's floating ability confirmed this inspiration. Enemies could be picked up and thrown, and blocks could be stacked for vertical progression. The game features non-linear stages with verticality, sand-digging mechanics, and enjoyable boss battles. Visuals and soundtracks can be toggled between modern and 8-bit styles.
Rugrats: Adventures in Gameland is surprisingly good, a quality platformer inspired by Super Mario Bros. 2, with added elements. The Rugrats license is well-integrated, though voice acting in cutscenes would have been a nice addition. While short and simple, it's enjoyable for platformer and Rugrats fans. Multiplayer is also available.
