"Mastering Rune Slayer Fishing: A Beginner's Guide"

Author : Patrick Update:Apr 10,2025

If you ever doubted that *Rune Slayer* is an MMORPG, let the presence of fishing in the game be your proof. While we're joking about the fishing trope in MMORPGs, we're here to guide you through the fishing mechanics in *Rune Slayer*. It's not as straightforward as in *Fisch*, but we've got you covered on how to catch those elusive fish.

Before you start reeling in fish, make sure to accept the fishing quest from Simon the Fisherman, the white-haired NPC you'll find at one of the piers where the Baracuda swims. Simon tasks you with catching 5 "fish," and in return, he'll reward you with a Tackle Box (we'll get to why the quotation marks are used later).

Here's the catch: to start fishing, you'll need a fishing rod and some bait/tackle, and conveniently, Simon the Fisherman is your go-to vendor for these essentials.

So, purchase a Wood Fishing Rod and some Worms from Simon. Most players suggest having at least 5 worms, but we opted for 10 to be on the safe side. No, you can't equip the bait. The Worms simply need to be in your inventory, and although you don't equip them, they're used automatically when you fish. Each time you catch a fish, one Worm is removed from your inventory.

The crucial detail here is that you won't be able to catch any fish unless you have at least 5 bait items. We tried with just one Worm and caught nothing. It was only after we had 5 Worms in our inventory that we started catching fish. We recommend placing the Worms in your hotbar to keep an eye on your bait count. Once you're equipped with these essentials, you're ready to move on to the next step.

First, select your Wood Fishing Rod. You can't equip it in the traditional sense, so just move it to your hotbar or access it from your inventory, and your character will hold it ready to fish.

Hold M1 to cast your line into a body of water (the pier next to Simon the Fisherman is a good spot).

Then, keep an eye on the bobber. When you see it ripple once or twice, click M1 again to reel in your catch. It's that simple.

However, this method isn't foolproof. Often, you won't catch anything at all. Sometimes, you'll pull up junk, but the good news is Simon counts junk as a catch (hence the quotation marks around "fish" earlier).

So, your goal is to cast your line, wait for the ripples, hit M1, and reel in anything five times. We managed to catch only two actual fish, with the rest being Old Cups.

Once you've caught 5 "fish", return to Simon the Fisherman to complete the quest. He'll reward you with a tackle box. Open it and store your remaining worms inside to save inventory space for more important items.

That's all there is to fishing in Rune Slayer. Enjoy your time on the water, and if you need more guidance, don't forget to check out our The Ultimate Beginner's Guide to Rune Slayer.
