Metro is marking a major milestone with its 15th anniversary by offering one of its titles completely free for a limited time. This special promotion gives both new and returning players an opportunity to dive into the world of Metro, starting with the game that began it all—Metro 2033 Redux. But that's not all; the developers have also shared updates about the future of the franchise and how current global events continue to shape their creative direction.
Metro 15th Anniversary Highlights
Metro 2033 Redux Is Free Until April 16
To commemorate 15 years since the series' debut, 4A Games has made Metro 2033 Redux available for free on Steam and Xbox until April 16 at 3 PM UTC / 5 PM CET / 9 AM PT. The announcement came via Metro’s official Twitter (X) account on April 14, giving fans just two days to claim the title before the offer expires.
This gesture was intended to introduce new players to the origins of the Metro universe while allowing longtime fans to revisit the game that started the journey. Last month, in a blog post published on March 16, 4A Games detailed their plans to celebrate this milestone across the year, including social media features, exclusive content, and special deals.
The post stated: “Throughout this year, there will be events, deals, and celebratory content on the Metro social media channels to thank you, our players, for coming on the journey so far with us.”
Founded in Kyiv, Ukraine, and later expanded to Malta, 4A Games created Metro 2033 based on the science fiction novel by Russian author Dmitry Glukhovsky. Despite ongoing challenges due to the war in Ukraine, the studio remains committed to delivering meaningful narratives that reflect real-world experiences. They added: “These circumstances are incredibly challenging, the situation remains dangerous and not within our control, but we are currently as safe as possible. We want to manage your expectations around the reveal of the next Metro title—it will be ready when it is ready, and we can’t wait for you to see it.”
The Future of Metro
Currently, 4A Games is developing two triple-A titles—one being the next installment in the Metro series and another featuring a brand-new intellectual property. While details on the new IP remain under wraps, the team has provided some insight into the upcoming Metro game.
The full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 had a profound impact on the narrative approach for the next Metro title. As described in their official update: “As we said in our last studio update, in 2022 a full-scale Russian invasion changed how we wanted to tell the story of the next Metro game. As art became life for many of our developers in Ukraine, we drew from that lived experience to create an even darker story. Those themes already present in Metro are becoming ever more apparent and important.”
Despite the hardships they face, the team at 4A Games continues to push forward, determined to deliver a powerful and relevant chapter in the Metro saga. Fans can rest assured that the game will carry the same depth, emotional resonance, and immersive gameplay that the series is known for—when it's truly ready.
