Warner Bros. Games Shutting Down MultiVersus
Multiversus Season 5 Will Be Its Last Season
On January 31, 2025, MultiVersus’ official Twitter (X) account announced that the game will cease operations on May 30, 2025, following the completion of its fifth and final season. In a detailed blog post on the MultiVersus official website, Player First Games and Warner Bros. confirmed that "our next Season will serve as the final seasonal content update for the game."
Kicking off on February 4, 2025, and running through May 30, 2025, MultiVersus Season 5 will introduce two new playable characters: DC’s Aquaman and Looney Tunes’ Lola Bunny. According to the blog post, "All new Season 5 content, including Aquaman and Lola Bunny, will be earnable through gameplay." Once Season 5 concludes, MultiVersus will no longer be available for download on platforms like the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Steam, or Epic Games Store.
No official reason for the shutdown has been provided by MultiVersus.
Moving Forward With MultiVersus’ Offline Mode
Following the end of Season 5, MultiVersus will transition to an offline mode, allowing players to continue enjoying the game locally. This offline mode will support solo play against AI opponents or local multiplayer with up to three friends. To access this feature, players need to download the latest version of MultiVersus during the Season 5 window, starting February 4 at 9 AM PST and ending May 30 at 9 AM PDT.
Upon logging in, the game will generate a local save file linked to the players’ PlayStation Network, Microsoft Store, Steam, or Epic Games Store account, enabling them to retain all earned and purchased content for offline play.
As of January 31, 2025, MultiVersus has halted real money transactions. Gleamium, the game’s premium currency, is no longer available for purchase in the online store. However, players with existing Gleamium can continue using it to unlock in-game content until the end of Season 5.
MultiVersus First Opened Public Beta In 2022
MultiVersus first captured the gaming community's attention with its public beta launch in July 2022. Positioned as a free-to-play fighting game, it drew comparisons to Super Smash Bros. but set itself apart with a unique 2v2 team-based format. From July 2022 to June 2023, the open public beta rolled out several updates and two seasons' worth of content. The game was relaunched in May 2024, introducing enhancements like new characters, rollback netcode, a new PvE mode, and new currencies.
Despite these updates, player satisfaction remained low due to ongoing technical issues, frequent disconnections, and concerns over microtransactions. Reports from July 2024 indicated a significant 70% drop in player count on PS4 and PS5.
MultiVersus will officially shut down on May 30 at 9 AM PDT, concluding its run with a roster of 35 playable characters from various franchises. Player First Games and Warner Bros. expressed their gratitude, stating, "We will be forever grateful for the incredible support of the MultiVersus community throughout this journey."
MultiVersus remains available for download on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC until May 30, 2025.
