Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons: A Potential Computer Mouse Mode?
New circumstantial evidence suggests the Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons might function as makeshift computer mice. While the widespread adoption of this feature by game developers remains uncertain, it aligns with Nintendo's history of innovative experimentation.
The evidence comes from Famiboards user LiC, who previously analyzed Vietnamese customs data related to a suspected Nintendo parts supplier. This data source has fueled numerous Switch 2 rumors since mid-2024.
In early January 2025, LiC revealed further findings: shipping manifests referencing polyethylene (PE) adhesive tape described as "mouse soles" and intended "for game console handles." The "mouse soles" designation, typically used for the bottom of computer mice, hints at a potential mouse-like functionality for the Switch 2 Joy-Cons.
Two "mouse sole" model numbers, LG7 and SML7, were identified. These numbers haven't been found in public component databases, suggesting they are new, unreleased products. The listed size (90 x 90mm) suggests the tape is large enough to cover the entire back of the Joy-Cons, likely requiring trimming during assembly. The validity of this information, of course, remains unconfirmed.
Not a First for Handhelds
While novel for Nintendo, a mouse-like controller mode isn't unprecedented. The Lenovo Legion GO, released in 2023, already features this capability with its right controller, which transforms into a mouse when rotated sideways. Lenovo even provides a plastic piece to facilitate smoother surface movement in this mode.
The Legion GO also boasts magnetic rails for attaching controllers—a feature also rumored for the Switch 2. This similarity further strengthens the speculative connection between the two devices.
