The initial scenes of the Nintendo Switch 2 announcement trailer showcase a console that's notably larger than its predecessor. As the familiar Joy-Con controllers detach from the original Switch, the tablet section expands and transforms into the new, enhanced version. This significant increase in size indicates Nintendo's shift away from the compact handhelds of yesteryear, aligning more closely with the larger portable devices like the Steam Deck and iPad.
While Nintendo hasn't released exact size dimensions, we can estimate the size based on the trailer and insights from a recent leak. At CES 2025, we got a hands-on experience with a Switch 2 mock-up designed by Genki. Although we couldn't verify its accuracy at the time, the trailer confirms that Nintendo's design closely mirrors this mock-up. Therefore, the measurements we gathered at CES should be quite close to the final dimensions of the Switch 2.
So, let's dive into the estimated size of the Switch 2.
Nintendo Switch 2 Screen Size
Based on our estimations, the **Switch 2 features an 8-inch screen**. This measurement refers to the diagonal length of the display area (excluding the bezels), which is the standard for screen sizes. This size aligns with a rumor from early 2024. We estimate the display to be approximately **177mm wide and 99mm tall**.
If these estimates hold true, the Switch 2's screen would be nearly 30% larger diagonally and **66% larger in total area** compared to the original Switch's 6.2-inch LCD display. While size isn't everything, a larger, high-quality display could significantly enhance the gaming experience on the Switch 2.
How does the Switch 2's screen stack up against other handhelds? The Switch Lite's 5.5-inch LCD touchscreen would be 45% smaller diagonally and 111% smaller in surface area compared to the Switch 2. The Switch OLED, with its 7-inch display, would be 14% smaller diagonally and 30% smaller in total area.
When the original Switch debuted in 2017, it faced little competition. Now, with the advent of portable PCs like the Steam Deck, the landscape has changed. The original Steam Deck and Steam Deck OLED both feature 7-inch and 7.4-inch screens, respectively, with a 16:10 aspect ratio, larger than any Switch console to date. However, the Switch 2's 8-inch screen would still surpass the Steam Deck OLED by 8% diagonally and 11% in overall area.
Nintendo Switch 2 Overall Console Size
Given the larger screen, it's no surprise that the Switch 2 itself is bigger. The original Switch already required sizable pockets, and the Switch 2 will likely need even more space, fitting comfortably only in cargo pants pockets or a bag.
Using the Genki mock-up at CES, we measured the Switch 2 to be just over 10.5 inches long and 4.5 inches tall, including the Joy-Cons. After carefully scaling images from the trailer to match our photos of the mock-up and measuring them, we estimate the Switch 2 to be approximately **265mm long and 115mm tall**.
For comparison, the original Switch measures 239mm long and 102mm tall, making the **Switch 2 about 25% larger** overall. It would also be around 61% larger than the Switch Lite (208mm x 91mm) and approximately 12% smaller than the Steam Deck (298mm x 117mm).
We couldn't measure the depth of the Genki mock-up precisely, but it appears that the Switch 2's thickness will be similar to the original Switch's half-inch profile. Thus, while the console's footprint will be much larger, its thickness should remain consistent.
Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con Size
The transformation animation in the Switch 2 reveal trailer indicates that the Joy-Con controllers will maintain a similar width to those of the original Switch but will be slightly taller. Using our somewhat scientific method of scaling images, we estimate the new **Switch 2 Joy-Cons to be around 32mm wide and 115mm tall** – the same width as the original, but 13mm taller. This would make the new Joy-Con approximately **13% larger** than the original.
Nintendo Switch 2 Screen Unit Size
Subtracting the size of the Joy-Cons from the overall console dimensions, we estimate the **Switch 2 screen unit to be 200mm long and 115mm tall**. This represents a **31% increase** over the original Switch's screen unit.
This size is sufficient to accommodate the 8-inch 16:9 screen, with an estimated 11mm bezel on either side and 8mm bezel on the top and bottom. These bezels are slimmer on the sides than the original Switch but similar in height to the top and bottom.
Keep in mind that these are all estimates and could be off when Nintendo releases the official dimensions. However, given our experience with the Genki mock-up, we're confident that we're close to the mark. We expect the Switch 2 to be about 25% larger than the original Switch when we get our hands on it later this year.
