Following its Xbox and PC release, Palworld finally arrives on PlayStation consoles, as announced during PlayStation's September 2024 State of Play. However, a significant exception exists: the PS5 launch is delayed indefinitely in Japan.
Palworld's PlayStation 5 Debut: A Global Launch, Except Japan
State of Play Unveils Palworld for PS5
The PlayStation State of Play in September 2024 showcased Palworld's PS5 arrival, even featuring a trailer highlighting in-game gear inspired by Horizon Forbidden West's Aloy. This global launch, however, excludes Japan. The reason for the Japanese delay is the ongoing legal battle between Nintendo/Pokémon and Palworld's developer, Pocketpair. A patent infringement lawsuit filed by Nintendo and Pokémon is the suspected cause for the hold.
Palworld's PS5 Japanese Release: Date Uncertain
Following Sony's announcement, Palworld's Japanese Twitter (X) account issued a statement: The PS5 version launched in 68 countries and regions, but a Japanese release date remains undetermined. The team apologized for the delay, promising to bring the game to Japanese PS5 players as soon as possible.
While Pocketpair hasn't explicitly stated the reason for the delay, the ongoing legal proceedings in Japan are strongly implicated. Nintendo's lawsuit, filed in Tokyo Court, seeks an injunction and damages. A granted injunction could halt Palworld's operations entirely, potentially leading to the game's removal.
