How to Unlock Parry in Avowed

Parrying in Avowed isn't available from the start; you must unlock it. Navigate to the "Abilities" menu, then select the "Ranger" tab. You'll find the Parry ability near the top of the middle column. To unlock it, you'll need to invest an Ability point into one of the three core skill trees. Once that's done, Parry is yours.
Parry has three ranks, detailed below:
| Rank | Player Level Requirement | Level Description |
| 1 | N/A (1 Point Spent) | Unlocks Parry. |
| 2 | Player Level 5 | Increases Parry efficiency by 25%, dealing greater Stun when Parrying enemies. |
| 3 | Player Level 8 | Increases Parry efficiency by 50%, dealing greater Stun when parrying enemies. |
At level 10, you can unlock "Arrow Deflection," a separate ability allowing you to parry projectiles.
How to Parry Attacks in Avowed

Successful parrying requires precise timing—block just before an enemy's attack connects. A metallic clang and a visual cue confirm a successful parry, leaving your enemy reeling. Mastering the timing takes practice, but it's less demanding than in games like Dark Souls or Elden Ring.
Parrying Isn’t Always an Option
Not all attacks are parryable. Attacks indicated by a red circle require dodging. Furthermore, only certain weapons allow parrying: single-handed and two-handed weapons (unless in your off-hand), and shields (in your off-hand). Ranged weapons (guns, wands, bows) and grimoires cannot parry.
What Parrying Does (& Why You Might Want to Do It)
Parrying stuns attackers, creating an opening for significant damage. It's a powerful defensive and offensive tool, particularly effective for melee builds. However, ranged builds might find it less useful. Fortunately, respeccing in Avowed is easy, allowing you to adjust your abilities as needed.
