If you polled golf game enthusiasts about which pro sports series they'd most like to see 2K tackle next, a revived NFL 2K would undoubtedly top the list. Even MLB and NHL might trail behind. Yet, 2K is back for a third swing with PGA Tour 2K25, and after a few hours, it's easy to see the appeal.
HB Studios, the developer, has been refining its golf game for over a decade, starting with The Golf Club before partnering with 2K. This experience shines through in 2K25; I struggled to find major flaws. While not the most visually stunning sports game, and more real-life courses would be welcome (2K25 does include the PGA Championship, US Open, and The Open Championship), the overall experience was enjoyable. (I did note surprisingly choppy framerates on PC when surveying holes, however.)
The upgraded EvoSwing mechanic is a highlight. Using a controller, I preferred the right stick option: pull down to wind up, push forward to strike. Difficulty settings adjust forgiveness, allowing for realistic slices and hooks on higher settings or a more relaxed experience on lower settings (Perfect Swing). LB lets you shape shots for added control, and lateral movement on the tee box helps adjust for obstacles. Improved ball physics and the ability to play as Tiger Woods (this year's cover athlete) enhanced the experience.MyCareer receives a boost with narrative mechanics, similar to other sports games. I even got a movie role offer from Christopher "Shooter McGavin" McDonald (in the game, but not as his Happy Gilmore character). Choices affect stat boosts, and earned VC unlocks gear that impacts stats, alongside skill upgrades through gameplay. Added Quests offer refreshing weekly goals (e.g., 10 consecutive birdies).
The MyPlayer creator, while not extensively tested, allowed for reasonable self-creation, enhanced by skill trees. Multiplayer, including ranked matchmaking and cross-platform Societies (clubs), promises casual fun reminiscent of *Links 2004*. Asynchronous multiplayer caters to players in different time zones.PGA Tour 2K25 excels without being exceptional in any single area. This makes it hard to get wildly enthusiastic, but it seems like a solid choice for golf fans and those seeking a relaxing game. A playable demo is available now.
