After Inc.: A $2 Gamble in a Free-to-Play World
Ndemic Creations' latest release, After Inc., launched on November 28th, 2024, at a daring $2 price point. This sequel to the hugely popular Plague Inc. presents a surprisingly optimistic vision: rebuilding human civilization after the Necroa Virus. However, developer James Vaughn admits reservations about this pricing strategy in a recent interview with Game File.
The mobile gaming market's dominance by free-to-play (F2P) models, often featuring microtransactions, fueled Vaughn's concerns. Despite this, the team's confidence stems from the established success of Plague Inc. and Rebel Inc., games that demonstrate a continued demand for sophisticated strategy games on mobile platforms. Vaughn notes that without the prior success, even a high-quality game would struggle for visibility.
"Our existing successes with Plague Inc. and Rebel Inc. are the only reason we could even contemplate a premium release," Vaughn stated. "They help players find our games and prove there's still an audience for intelligent strategy games on mobile. Without Plague Inc., I believe any game, regardless of quality, would face an uphill battle for recognition."
Ndemic Creations guarantees all purchased content remains accessible without further costs. The App Store listing explicitly states the absence of consumable microtransactions and promises "Expansion Packs are buy once, play forever," ensuring players' progress isn't hindered by additional expenses.
Initial reception has been positive. After Inc. currently ranks among the top paid games on the App Store, alongside titles like Plague Inc. and Stardew Valley, and boasts a strong 4.77/5 rating on Google Play. A Steam early access version, After Inc. Revival, is slated for a 2025 release, expanding the game's reach to PC players.
What is After Inc.? A Post-Apocalyptic Rebuild
After Inc. blends 4X grand strategy and simulation elements. Players rebuild human society in a post-apocalyptic United Kingdom, utilizing salvaged resources from the ruins of civilization to establish and expand settlements. Construction of essential buildings like farms and lumberyards is crucial for maintaining a thriving population, while five unique leaders (ten in the Steam version) offer diverse strategic options.
The looming threat of zombies adds a survival challenge, necessitating strategic resource management and settlement defense. But as Vaughn assures players, "Nothing that can't be solved with some nails stuck in a cricket bat!"
