Persistent Shortage of PS5 Disc Drives Continues to Plague Gamers
The ongoing scarcity of standalone PlayStation 5 disc drives persists, causing significant frustration among PS5 Pro owners. Since the November 2024 launch of the disc-less PS5 Pro, demand for the separately sold drive has skyrocketed, creating a supply crisis. This is particularly problematic given the already high cost of the PS5 Pro console.
Sony's 2023 release of the attachable PS5 disc drive initially served as a peripheral for the digital-only PS5. However, with the PS5 Pro's release, it became essential for gamers wanting to utilize physical media. This increased demand has led to a situation reminiscent of the original PS5 launch in 2020, with scalpers aggressively acquiring and reselling the drives at significantly inflated prices.
The problem remains unresolved. As of today, both US and UK PlayStation Direct websites remain consistently out of stock, with any available units disappearing almost instantly. While some third-party retailers like Best Buy and Target occasionally receive stock, the limited availability is dwarfed by the considerable demand.
This shortage is further exacerbated by scalpers, who appear to be prioritizing the acquisition of the drives themselves rather than the PS5 Pro consoles. Sony's silence on the matter is notable, especially considering the company's proactive approach to PS5 production during the pandemic.
The PS5 Pro's omission of a built-in disc drive has generated considerable controversy since its September unveiling. The additional cost of the standalone drive, approximately $80 from official Sony retailers, is further compounded by the inflated prices charged by scalpers. Consequently, many PlayStation fans find themselves in a holding pattern, awaiting increased supply and reduced demand – a scenario that shows no immediate signs of improvement.
