Sony's PlayStation Network (PSN) Account Requirement Eases for Some PC Ports

Sony has announced a significant change to its PC port policy, making PSN accounts optional for several PlayStation 5 titles. This shift, effective after the January 30, 2025 release of Marvel's Spider-Man 2 on PC, will impact several high-profile games.
PSN Accounts No Longer Mandatory for Select PC Games

The list of games ditching the PSN requirement includes Marvel's Spider-Man 2, God of War Ragnarök, Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered, and the upcoming PC release of The Last of Us Part II Remastered (April 2025). However, it's important to note that this change doesn't apply to all PC ports; titles like Ghost of Tsushima Director's Cut and Until Dawn will still require a PSN account.
Incentives for PSN Account Holders

While PSN is no longer mandatory, Sony is incentivizing players who choose to link their accounts. Benefits include trophies, friend management, and exclusive in-game bonuses:
- Marvel's Spider-Man 2: Early unlock of the Spider-Man 2099 Black Suit and Miles Morales 2099 Suit.
- God of War Ragnarök: Access to the Armor of the Black Bear set and a resource bundle (500 Hacksilver and 250 XP).
- The Last of Us Part II Remastered: 50 bonus points, and Ellie's Jordan's Jacket skin.
- Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered: Access to the Nora Valiant outfit.
Sony has indicated that further incentives may be added in the future.
Responding to Player Backlash

This policy shift follows considerable player backlash in 2024. The mandatory PSN linking for Helldivers 2 led to its delisting in numerous countries lacking PSN support, resulting in negative reviews and criticism. Similar negative feedback surrounded God of War Ragnarök's PC port. The limited global availability of PSN (approximately 70 countries) has been a major source of frustration for players worldwide. This move by Sony appears to be a direct response to these concerns, aiming to improve accessibility and player experience.
