The surprise appearance of Mark Hamill's Luke Skywalker in *The Mandalorian* is etched in Star Wars history as one of its most thrilling moments. Rosario Dawson, who joined the Star Wars universe, shared with us at Star Wars Celebration a surprising twist from her time on the set of *The Book of Boba Fett*. Dawson was completely unaware of Hamill's cameo until he unexpectedly walked onto the set, adding to the list of her career's most memorable surprises.
Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau, the masterminds behind the scenes, had cleverly used Jedi Master Plo Koon as a decoy to mask Luke's cameo. They also shared the amusing tale of how Dawson was caught off guard, despite the precautions taken to keep the secret under wraps. In an effort to prevent leaks, the scripts substituted Luke Skywalker with Plo Koon, a character fans remember meeting a tragic end in *Revenge of the Sith*. Dawson, upon reading the script, was as baffled as any fan would be.
"I was like... I don't know... but people disappear and then they come back, so maybe it's possible?" Dawson recalled. The surprise intensified when Mark Hamill arrived on set, humorously dismissing the Plo Koon plot twist, saying, "Plo Koon? That wouldn't even make sense!" Dawson responded with a laugh, "I know it didn't make sense, but I still had to think it made sense because I got the script and everything!"
Favreau and Filoni expressed their regret over the oversight, with Favreau admitting, "That was bad on us!" Filoni added with a chuckle, "We were in it so much. I think we assumed you'd gotten told the right information." Favreau emphasized the importance of secrecy around two key moments: Grogu's reveal at the end of the first episode and Luke Skywalker's appearance at the end of season two. "We were biting our nails all the way through, and we somehow miraculously made it cleanly to both of those because everything else leaked. But, unfortunately, we didn't fill in our partner here," he confessed.
Dawson took the blunder in stride, jokingly saying, "I love it, they know I can't be trusted."
