RTX 5070 Ti vs. RX 9070 XT: Battle of GPUs

Author : Isaac Update:May 12,2025

For gamers aspiring to experience top-tier 4K gaming without breaking the bank, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090 might be out of reach at its steep $1,999+ price point. Fortunately, you don’t need to settle for less. Both the Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 Ti and the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT offer compelling alternatives, delivering an outstanding 4K gaming experience at a much more accessible price.

Although current market conditions have driven up prices due to high demand and limited supply post-launch, the RTX 5070 Ti and RX 9070 XT stand out as the ideal choices for gamers seeking high-end performance without the exorbitant cost.

RTX 5070 Ti vs. RX 9070 XT: Specs

Comparing the specs of these two GPUs, which use different architectures, can be challenging. Nvidia's CUDA cores and AMD's Shading Units, while functionally similar, differ significantly, making direct comparisons tricky.

The AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT boasts 64 RDNA 4 compute units, each equipped with 64 shader units, totaling 4,096 shader units. Each compute unit also features two AI Accelerators and one RT Accelerator, resulting in 128 and 64, respectively. Paired with 16GB of GDDR6 memory on a 256-bit bus, this setup is well-suited for modern gaming, though it may be tested in future titles, especially at 4K.

On the other hand, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 Ti also comes with 16GB of memory, but it utilizes the faster GDDR7 on a 256-bit bus, offering higher bandwidth. The RTX 5070 Ti features 70 Streaming Multiprocessors, equivalent to Compute Units, with a total of 8,960 CUDA Cores. Nvidia's design offers twice as many Shader Units per Compute Unit, a strategy implemented since the RTX 3080. However, this doesn't automatically translate to double the performance.

RTX 5070 Ti vs. RX 9070 XT: Performance

Although the RTX 5070 Ti may appear superior on paper, the real-world performance tells a different story. Both GPUs excel as entry-level options for 4K gaming and are among the best for 1440p gaming.

During my review of the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT, I anticipated it would be close to the RTX 5070 Ti but fall behind in ray tracing-heavy games. Surprisingly, even in titles like Cyberpunk 2077, the AMD card maintained performance within a few frames of the more expensive RTX 5070 Ti.

There are instances where the RTX 5070 Ti takes the lead, such as in Total War: Warhammer 3, where it achieves 87fps at 4K compared to the RX 9070 XT's 76fps. Despite Nvidia's occasional edge, the Radeon RX 9070 XT averaged 2% faster across various games. This small yet significant difference makes it an outstanding value, especially given its 21% lower theoretical cost.

RTX 5070 Ti vs. RX 9070 XT: Software and Features

Choosing a graphics card today involves more than just hardware capabilities. Both Nvidia and AMD offer comprehensive software suites that enhance GPU functionality.

The standout feature of the Nvidia RTX 5070 Ti is its DLSS technology, which includes AI upscaling and Frame Generation. With the RTX 5000 series, Nvidia introduces multi-frame generation, capable of generating three AI frames for each rendered frame, significantly boosting frame rates with a slight latency cost mitigated by Nvidia Reflex. This feature is best utilized at frame rates of at least 45fps, ideally over 60fps.

AMD's Radeon RX 9070 XT supports Frame Generation but can only produce one interpolated frame per rendered frame. The major advancement is FSR 4, introducing AI upscaling to AMD GPUs for the first time. Unlike previous temporal upscaling methods, FSR 4 uses machine learning for more accurate image upscaling, though it may not be as fast as its predecessor.

It's worth noting that AMD's AI upscaler is in its first generation, whereas Nvidia has been refining DLSS for seven years.

RTX 5070 Ti vs. RX 9070 XT: Price

GPU pricing remains a contentious issue, with new generation cards often sold out and prices inflated. Both Nvidia and AMD suggest retail prices, but third-party sellers often set their own higher prices. While it's uncertain what prices will look like in the future, there's hope that they will align more closely with MSRP as supply improves.

At its launch price of $599, the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT is a standout value, delivering robust 4K performance when paired with the new FSR 4 AI upscaler. This pricing harks back to when flagship GPUs launched at more reasonable price points before Nvidia's gradual price increases starting with the RTX 2080 Ti.

Conversely, the Nvidia RTX 5070 Ti, with a base price of $749, is $150 more than the RX 9070 XT, despite their similar performance. While Nvidia offers additional features like Multi-Frame Generation, whether these justify the price difference depends on individual gaming needs and preferences.

Winner: AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT

The Winner Is… the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT

Both the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT and Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 Ti are excellent choices for high-end 1440p and 4K gaming. However, the RX 9070 XT's ability to match the RTX 5070 Ti's performance at a significantly lower price makes it the clear winner. As prices hopefully stabilize, the value proposition of the AMD card becomes even more compelling.

If you're building a gaming PC for high-end 1440p or venturing into 4K gaming, the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT is an exceptional choice. While it lacks multi-frame generation, most gamers don't yet have the high-refresh 4K monitors that would benefit from this feature.
