In a thrilling surprise announcement, RuneScape: Dragonwilds has launched into early access. During the early access livestream on April 16, developer Jagex revealed that the game is now playable on Steam, just weeks after dropping its first trailer.
The gaming community was caught off guard as the game had only recently been added to Steam's wishlist on April 1 and unveiled its first gameplay teaser on April 2. Initially teased in 2022, it wasn’t until late 2024 that Jagex opened signups for alpha testing of a "new survival game set in the RuneScape universe." The game was officially revealed as RuneScape: Dragonwilds on March 31, 2025.

Jagex has set sights on an early 2026 release for Dragonwilds. The developers emphasized their commitment to perfection, stating, "We want to spend the time to get everything right to ensure that our players enjoy a complete, satisfying experience that you’ll want to revisit with friends again and again."
Jagex Executive Producer Jesse America highlighted that Dragonwilds offers a fresh take on the RuneScape universe, tailored for the franchise's dedicated fans. He noted that the early access phase marks just the beginning of their development journey.
He elaborated, "Throughout Early Access, we’ll be updating the game regularly with new content and features, while closely listening to the community to craft an iconic open-world survival crafting game that resonates with both our longstanding RuneScape fans and newcomers."
Early Access Roadmap Revealed
Jagex has shared the early access roadmap, outlining the exciting updates planned for players. A highlight is the introduction of Fellhollow, a new region that exists in a limbo between life and death.
Ruled by the soul-eater dragon Imaru, this region is influenced by the wild anima of Ashenfall and the cursed energy of the Underworld. Players will explore this new territory alongside the iconic RuneScape character Death, experiencing new quests, lore, gear, and music. Additionally, new skills for magic, ranged, and farming will be introduced.
The game will also feature new enemy types like Lesser Dragons, dragon slayer gear, a hardcore mode, and a creative mode. While specific release dates for these updates haven’t been disclosed, Jagex promises continuous enhancements throughout the early access period.
