The second season of The Last of Us hasn't premiered yet, but its imminent arrival is already generating substantial buzz.
The latest Season 2 trailer, unveiled during a SXSW panel, has achieved over 158 million cross-platform views in just three days according to Warner Brothers Discovery. HBO reports this sets a new record for their original programming, outperforming previous promotional materials by over 160%.
The series continues gaining momentum as both new and existing fans eagerly await Season 2. Recent data shows Season 1 episodes now average approximately 32 million domestic viewers across platforms - a dramatic increase from the Season 1 finale's 8.2 million same-day viewership in March 2023 (per Deadline). These staggering numbers illustrate the show's tremendous popularity and confirm its status as one of HBO's most successful recent productions.

Season 2 will advance the storyline five years, following Joel and Ellie as they navigate increasingly complex conflicts - both between themselves and within their treacherous post-apocalyptic world. Returning cast members Pedro Pascal, Bella Ramsey, Gabriel Luna and Rutina Wesley will be joined by newcomers Kaitlyn Dever, Isabella Merced, Catherine O'Hara and Jeffrey Wright.
During the SXSW panel, creators Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin confirmed the reintroduction of fungal spores - notably absent from Season 1 - as evidenced by trailer footage showing Ellie encountering spore-emitting infected. Druckmann explained: "We're escalating both the numbers/types of infected and transmission methods." Mazin later clarified: "Spores are back," with Druckmann adding their inclusion served dramatic narrative purposes.
The Last of Us Season 2 premieres April 13, 2025 on HBO and HBO Max.
