Remember Shawn Levy's upcoming Star Wars movie? Fans of the Deadpool & Wolverine director can rest easy knowing that the project is still moving forward. In fact, we have a fresh update from the film's writer, Jonathan Tropper, to keep our excitement in check.
"I am [excited] too," Tropper shared with Screen Rant, expressing optimism about the project's progress. "I hope it's on the way sooner than you think."
At this stage, the movie remains shrouded in mystery. One of the few confirmed details is its setting, which takes place after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has shed light on the film’s timeline, stating in a February interview with Deadline, "That’s also in the future. It’s all post-[the first] nine. Shawn’s is a standalone Star Wars story that'll take place post-nine, maybe five or six years out." This positions Levy’s film as the first to delve into the post-Rise of Skywalker era.
In the same conversation, Kennedy confirmed that Levy's movie will follow the release of 2026's The Mandalorian and Grogu. "I'm producing the Mandalorian movie right now, and I'm also producing Shawn Levy's movie, which is after that," she explained. Additionally, it has been reported that Ryan Gosling is set to star in the film, adding another layer of anticipation for fans.
Tropper’s comments suggest positive movement in the project's development, although fans will need to exercise patience. The film is not expected to hit theaters until at least the last quarter of 2026, if not 2027.
Since the release of the critically mixed Star Wars: Episode 9 - The Rise of Skywalker in 2019, Disney has faced challenges with its Star Wars films. Several planned projects, including one from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and a trilogy from Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff, have been canceled. Moreover, a Star Wars movie initially slated for a late 2026 release was recently removed from Disney's calendar.

At the 2023 Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm announced three new Star Wars feature films: a Dave Filoni-directed New Republic film set in his Mando-verse, a Dawn of the Jedi movie led by James Mangold, and a New Jedi Order feature directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, which will see Daisy Ridley reprise her role as Rey post-Rise of Skywalker. The Obaid-Chinoy project has seen some changes, with screenwriter Steven Knight recently departing after taking over from Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. Despite these shifts, Rey remains a focal point for Disney's future Star Wars projects, as confirmed by a recent THR report stating her involvement in multiple upcoming films.
Disney's Star Wars pipeline is robust, with X-Men producer Simon Kinberg set to write a new trilogy that diverges from the Skywalker Saga. Meanwhile, fans can look forward to the next Star Wars content hitting their screens with Season 2 of Andor, set to premiere on Disney+ on April 22, featuring a triple premiere episode to kick things off.
