Silent Hill f was originally intended to take place in the series' iconic titular town, but creative challenges emerged due to Mount Fuji's imposing presence. Discover how the team adapted the setting and developed compelling new characters that shape the game's harrowing narrative.
Silent Hill f Worldbuilding and Character Insights
Mount Fuji's Dominance Forced Creative Rethinking
During a July 26 Famitsu interview, the development team revealed that while Kanayama in Gifu Prefecture perfectly captured their desired eerie atmosphere, they initially envisioned a different setting for Silent Hill f.
Writer Ryukishi07 disclosed they first considered Shizuoka Prefecture, humorously dubbing it "Quiet Hill." However, Mount Fuji's overwhelming presence disrupted their creative vision for Silent Hill's trademark fog-shrouded aesthetic.
Ryukishi07 explained, "The majestic sight of Fuji dominated the landscape to a degree that contradicted Silent Hill's mysterious atmosphere. Wherever we positioned ourselves, the sacred mountain's looming presence broke the intended mood."
This realization prompted extensive location scouting, ultimately leading them to Kanayama's grid-like urban maze. The writer elaborated, "After evaluating multiple options, Kanayama's distinctive layout offered exactly what we needed."
As mentioned during March's Silent Hill Transmission, the team captured authentic ambient sounds and studied historical records to recreate the 1960s period setting with precision.
Connections to Higurashi: When They Cry
Following recent character reveals (starting with protagonist Shimizu Hinako) on official Silent Hill social channels, fans speculated about potential ties to Ryukishi07's renowned Higurashi series.
The writer clarified, "This narrative exists entirely within Silent Hill's universe - it shares no foundation with Higurashi." However, Producer Motoi Okamoto acknowledged Ryukishi07's signature style influenced their collaboration decision.
Okamoto stated, "After experiencing how masterfully he crafts stories about communities trapped in ominous atmospheres, we knew he could create an exceptional Silent Hill experience."
Character Roles and Story Functions
Beyond the protagonist, players are particularly intrigued by Igarashi Sakuko, frequently featured in promotional material. Her official description notes: "Hinako's kindhearted friend with a spiritual sensitivity. As a shrine maiden's daughter, she assists with ceremonies while claiming the ability to see supernatural beings."
Okamoto characterized her as "the class occult enthusiast," a familiar archetype in Japanese school stories, but with a distinctive Silent Hill twist: "The game constantly questions whether her visions reflect imagination or authentic perception, adding compelling ambiguity."
Additional character bios revealed include childhood friend Iwai Shu and mutual acquaintance Nishida Rinko. The team also introduced Ebisuoka Junior High, described as a grand institution that appears conspicuously out of place within its surroundings.
With Konami preparing to launch what they promise will be "a definitive Japanese horror experience," anticipation builds for this chilling addition to the franchise. Silent Hill f arrives September 25 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, with Digital Deluxe Edition purchasers gaining two-day early access beginning September 23.
