The Sleeping Dogs movie adaptation, which was recently confirmed to be canceled, may have a new chance at life thanks to Marvel star Simu Liu.
According to Newsweek, Liu responded to a fan’s request for a film based on the 2012 game on X/Twitter, revealing he is actively working to make it happen. "Collaborating with the rights holders to bring Sleeping Dogs to the big screen," he stated.
The film adaptation was first announced in 2017 with Donnie Yen attached to star, but the project went quiet a year later. Just weeks ago, Yen himself confirmed that it had been shelved.
"I devoted considerable time and effort, working closely with producers and even investing my own money to secure scripts and partial rights," Yen explained. "I waited for years—truly wanting to make it happen. Unfortunately, things fell through. That's just how Hollywood works, you know?"
As a result, all expectations for continuing the Hong Kong–based action series had dimmed—until Shang-Chi star Liu responded to a fan's social media post. Whether he will secure the rights or move the project forward remains uncertain.
Sleeping Dogs originally launched on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC, following undercover detective Wei Shen as he infiltrates one of Hong Kong's most dangerous Triad organizations. The game was critically acclaimed, receiving an 8/10 in IGN’s review, but no sequels ever materialized.
