Ryan Gosling in Talks to Star in Shawn Levy's Star Wars Film
Director Shawn Levy, known for Deadpool and Wolverine, is reportedly on the verge of joining the Star Wars universe, bringing Ryan Gosling along for the ride. The Hollywood Reporter announced that Levy's Star Wars project is in negotiations with Gosling to take a leading role. Levy has been developing this film since 2022, with a completed script dating back to last year. He's collaborating once again with Jonathan Tropper, screenwriter for This Is Where I Leave You and The Adam Project, both Levy-directed films.
Plot details remain tightly under wraps, with no confirmation on Gosling's character or the film's time period within the Star Wars timeline. However, it's confirmed to be separate from the Skywalker Saga. The Hollywood Reporter also indicates it's intended as a standalone film, ruling out a trilogy.

Gosling's potential involvement has reportedly accelerated the project's timeline. While Levy was previously attached to direct a boy band film starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, THR suggests that Gosling's confirmation would prioritize the Star Wars film, pushing production to begin this fall.
The Star Wars franchise is currently undergoing a transition. Following the cancellation of The Acolyte, Disney+ recently concluded its Skeleton Crew series. On the film side, Dave Filoni's Mandalorian and Grogu movie completed filming in December, slated for release on May 22, 2026. A new trilogy focusing on Daisy Ridley's Rey is also in the works.
A release date for Levy's Star Wars film remains unannounced, pending the project's progress. For a complete overview of upcoming Star Wars content, consult our 2025 preview.
