How to Unlock Caldarus as a Romanceable Character in Fields of Mistria
To begin your journey toward romancing Caldarus, you must first break the Fire Seal located on Floor 60 of the mines. To do this, gather and offer four specific items: a Sealing Scroll, a Faceted Rock Gem, an Emerald, and a Rockroot. Once the offering is complete, a cutscene will play where the Mines Priestess warns the player to leave or risk being sealed alongside the scroll.
As the farmer’s health depletes, Caldarus intervenes—transforming into his human form. He leaves behind the Dragon’s Breath spell and retreats to the Deep Woods. From this point forward, you can interact with him daily, give gifts, and proceed with his romance path like any other dateable NPC in the game.
After breaking the seal, Caldarus resides exclusively at his temple in the Deep Woods. Use the newly acquired Dragon’s Breath spell to permanently reveal the area on your map.
Caldarus’ Heart Events in Fields of Mistria
Upon unlocking Caldarus in the March 2025 update, he begins with six heart levels already filled. As of now, this matches the current heart level cap, meaning there are no additional heart events available yet. More are expected in future updates.
Currently, only a few key cutscenes are tied to Caldarus. One occurs early in the game during a dream sequence that introduces the magic system and core mechanics. The second plays out when Caldarus rescues the farmer from the sealing ritual after the Fire Seal is broken. At this point, his human form is revealed, and he returns to his temple to recover strength.
Both scenes unfold naturally through story progression, but one special event allows for a unique interaction: the Shooting Star Festival.
The Shooting Star Festival
The Shooting Star Festival takes place on Summer 28 and offers players the chance to go on a date with any romanceable character who has reached at least four heart levels. Since Caldarus starts at six hearts, you’re automatically eligible to take him on this romantic outing.
To trigger the event, gift Caldarus the Star Brooch before 8 PM on Summer 28. Then, meet up with him after that time to confirm your plans. A cutscene will follow, marking your first official date with the ancient dragon-turned-human.
During the evening at the Summit, Caldarus thanks you for inviting him and reflects on the stars and the history of the festival, once known as Starbinding. Dialogue choices allow for deeper philosophical discussions about connection, soul bonds, and the nature of villains in every story. (There's definitely some foreshadowing here.)
He muses whether you might have shared a moment in a past life, then grows tired. He ends the night by inviting you to continue stargazing together at his temple.
