Virtua Fighter Returns: New In-Engine Footage Unveiled
Sega has treated fans to a fresh look at the upcoming Virtua Fighter title, marking the franchise's return after nearly two decades of relative dormancy. The footage, shown at NVIDIA's CES 2025 keynote, offers a glimpse into the game's visual style and direction. Development is being spearheaded by Sega's own Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, the team behind the acclaimed Yakuza series and the Virtua Fighter 5 remaster.
The showcased video, while not actual gameplay, uses in-engine graphics to provide a realistic preview of the final product. It depicts a shift away from the franchise's classic polygonal aesthetic towards a more realistic visual style, blending elements reminiscent of both Tekken 8 and Street Fighter 6. The iconic character Akira is featured, sporting new outfits that deviate from his traditional look.
Following the release of remasters of Virtua Fighter 5, including the Ultimate Showdown edition (coming to Steam January 2025), this new entry represents a significant step for the franchise. The footage, though impeccably choreographed, is clearly staged, showcasing deliberate combat sequences rather than raw gameplay. Nevertheless, its release alongside recent entries in other major fighting game franchises suggests a strong resurgence for the genre in the 2020s.
The involvement of Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, also working on Sega's Project Century, adds weight to the project. While details remain scarce, project director Riichirou Yamada's previous comments and Sega President and COO Shuji Utsumi's enthusiastic declaration – "Virtua Fighter is finally back!" – confirm Sega's commitment to revitalizing this legendary fighting game franchise. Further updates are eagerly anticipated.
