Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 modders have been doing fantastic work since the game's record-breaking release last year. Their latest breakthrough is perhaps the greatest yet.
Tom, also known as Warhammer Workshop, the mastermind behind Space Marine 2's excellent Astartes Overhaul, announced the release of 12-player co-op this week, and it looks fantastic. Gameplay footage showcases multiple players engaging in an epic battle against a Tyranid Trygon Prime, reminiscent of an MMO boss fight.
This is a feat many thought impossible, as the vanilla version of Space Marine 2 supports only three-player co-op. However, with the support of developer Saber Interactive, the modding team has not only broken through this barrier but aims to transform Space Marine 2 into an even more exciting game.
“Honestly, I’m just kind of in awe of Saber’s support for the modding community,” Tom shared with IGN. “None of us expected 12-player PvE sessions to be possible this soon — but somehow, here we are. Thanks to their generosity and trust, this huge leap forward is finally here, and it completely changes what we can do.”
It's important to note that the current mod is still in its testing phase — a test that performs remarkably well, but a test nonetheless. With 12-player co-op, the PvE balance of Space Marine 2 is thrown off, which is understandable given the increased number of players compared to what Saber designed the encounters for.
With 12-player co-op now a reality, modders are developing additional content to capitalize on this feature. Tom informed IGN that the team is working on various modes including prop hunt, PvP within operations, “massive” updates for the upcoming official horde mode, and, most thrilling of all, raid-style missions. These missions will feature bosses that require intense teamwork and introduce entirely new mechanics.
The Space Marine 2 modding community has grown significantly, with approximately 20,000 enthusiasts active in the main Discord server.
“As both a modder and a player, it’s hard not to be excited,” Tom added. “Huge credit as always to the Saber team for not just making all this possible, but continuing to deliver amazing content without the typical predatory battle-pass systems found in modern games.”
