The debut trailer for Sword and Fairy 4 Remake has arrived, drawing immediate comparisons to the visual style and combat of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.
Developed by Chinese studio Up Software and published by Cube Game, Sword and Fairy 4 Remake is a single-player, turn-based RPG built in Unreal Engine 5, slated for release on PC and consoles.
The official "Unpredictable Divine Will" trailer has sparked discussion for its similarities to Clair Obscur: Expedition 33's striking battle mechanics. From its dynamic UI to its action-oriented parry system, the resemblance is notable. Even the camera angles and movement during fights evoke memories of Sandfall Interactive's acclaimed RPG.

“Join Tianhe Yun and his companions on a quest to find the immortals,” the official description states. “Along the way, a long-sealed truth begins to unravel.”
The Legend of Sword and Fairy is a storied Chinese franchise with nine mainline titles, blending mythology and xianxia themes. Since its debut in 1995, the series has seen numerous successful sequels and spin-offs.
The Legend of Sword and Fairy 4 is technically the fifth core game and serves as a prequel to the third installment. The most recent main entry, The Legend of Sword and Fairy 7, launched in 2021 on PC. Its English console version, titled Sword and Fairy: Together Forever, followed in 2022 and was often viewed as a compelling alternative to modern Final Fantasy titles—a series that also inspired Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.
Fans are actively debating the connections between the two games. Some accuse the developer of copying Sandfall's work, with comments like, "This combat and style look like a direct copy from Expedition 33," and "Is this DLC for Expedition 33?" Others argue that Sword and Fairy 4 Remake simply reflects modern turn-based RPG trends, similar to the Persona series, and point to the franchise's long history as proof of its authenticity.

Meanwhile, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is riding a wave of renewed interest after its historic Game of the Year win at The Game Awards 2025, where Sandfall also surprise-released new DLC content.
