Chess is played on an 8x8 square board with alternating light and dark squares. The board is oriented so each player has a light square on their right-hand side.
Each player starts with 16 pieces: 8 Pawns, 2 Knights, 2 Bishops, 2 Rooks, 1 Queen, and 1 King. The player with the white pieces moves first. Turns then alternate, with one piece moved per turn.
There are over 2000 chess variants, including Bughouse Chess, Chess960, 3-Check Chess, and Four-Player Chess.
