Fans of the beloved action horror franchise were disappointed to learn that Evil Dead: The Game is no longer available for purchase, as its publisher has started to remove it from digital storefronts. Launched in 2022 across PC, PlayStation, and Xbox, the asymmetric multiplayer game received an 8/10 from IGN, praised for being "an asymmetric multiplayer game of cat and mouse that’s compelling and exhilarating, despite being rough around the edges - much like the horror/comedies that inspired it."
Despite the release of a Game of the Year Edition a year later, it failed to significantly boost player numbers. In September 2023, the planned Nintendo Switch version was canceled, and content development ceased. Now, three years after its initial launch, Evil Dead: The Game has been removed from sale, though its servers will remain active for existing players.
Saber Interactive, the game's developer and publisher, confirmed the decision in a statement on the game’s Steam page:
We can confirm we've begun the process of removing the game from digital storefronts. Anyone who has purchased the game will still be able to play it as we plan to keep our servers online for everyone.
We want to extend a sincere thank you to our community, to those who have been part of the game from the very beginning, and those who have recently joined us. We appreciate all of your support.
The decision to pull the game from sale has been met with negative feedback on its Steam page, with many reviews lamenting the game's effective demise. The overall Steam user review rating remains 'mixed.' One recent positive review from a player with over 380 hours in-game reads, "The end is nigh. It was fun while it lasted, lads. I mean that."
Saber Interactive, fresh off the success of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, continues to develop several licensed movie games, including John Carpenter's Toxic Commando, Jurassic Park Survival, and an untitled Avatar: The Last Airbender game. Additionally, Turok: Origins and Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 3 are in the works.
